The Warhammer 40,000 universe is set to take the gaming market by storm this year. In 2022, Games Workshop announced a slew of new video game releases for 2023 and beyond. One of those titles that caught my particular interest is Warhammer 40k: Warpforge, an upcoming digital card game set within the grimdark future.

Warpforge will be launching a free limited-time demo on Steam that will run from January 19th to the 22nd. Today, developer Everguild announced that the first playable faction within the demo will be the Necrons of the Sautekh Dynasty. The Necrons are a race of mechanical beings who once ruled the galaxy centuries in the past before being locked in slumber.

The major mechanic of the Necrons within the lore and tabletop game is their ability to return from death. As a result, it’s no surprise the Sautekh Dynasty will also focus around reanimating their fallen units. Everguild has also stated this is only the first of the playable Necron Dynasties. This most likely means that each race will also contain a variety of sub-factions that each focus on different core mechanics.

Warpforge looks to share a lot of assets from Everguild’s other card game Horus Heresy: Legions which was released in 2019 for PC and mobile platforms. I recently played Legions this year and greatly enjoyed the innovative faction-based gameplay and lore communicated by each card. Warpforge promises to expand upon this formula by adding playable Xenos factions rather than focusing solely on various Space Marine chapters within the Imperium of Man.

Warpforge is also confirmed to heavily focus on story-based campaigns just as Legions did. However, the game will still be offering competitive draft and constructed PVP modes in addition to special PVP events. Along with the Necrons, Warpforge will also launch with the mascots of 40k; the Ultramarines as well as the Orks of the Goff clan. Warhammer 40k: Warpforge is set to launch later this year for PC and mobile devices with cross-play support.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
