It’s not often that we see new content come out for an older title that’s not being actively supported. Games such as Borderlands 2 receiving a DLC to set up Borderlands 3 or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe announcing a season pass five years after it was re-released on the Nintendo Switch tend to be the exception. Most developers focus on an entirely new project. Another game that’s bucking the trend is The Game Bakers’ 2016 title, Furi.

Earlier this month it was announced that the game would be receiving the Onnamusha DLC for $6.99 on May 17th. The DLC introduces a new playable character known as the Onnamusha Rider who can be played in the Story, Practice, and Speedrun game modes. Not only is the character a female version of the original game’s rider, but she also comes with her own unique playstyle that incorporates two different stances.

The agile Spark stance provides a double dash and focuses on speed with weak attacks as a caveat. Meanwhile, the Storm stance is slower and more vulnerable but boasts power. Another unique aspect is that both stances fill up her unique Star gauge, although it fills up quickly with the Spark stance and slowly with the Storm stance. These changes are meant to provide players with a new way to discover or rediscover the game.

Alongside the release of the Onnamusha DLC is a free update to the base game. This update adds the previously paid One More Fight DLC, as well as all previous performance and accessibility updates for free. Both the Onnamusha DLC and the free update have been released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. There are no plans for the Xbox One version of the game to receive this update, due to the team having to prioritize with their limited budget and that version not having as much attention as the other platforms.

Furi is still one of the most satisfying and fun experiences I’ve had in a video game. Their 2020 title Haven was a much different game and with their wonderfully inclusive same-gender couple update a few months back for the game I wasn’t sure we would ever see new content (such as a sequel) for Furi. Needless to say, seeing them update this game is very exciting to me. I can’t wait to jump into the game again and die repeatedly to its absolutely incredible soundtrack.

Samuel (he/him) has been obsessed with video games since he was a kid watching bumbling zombies shuffle down a hallway in Resident Evil 20+ years ago (it's debatable if he should have seen a mature-rated game at that age but he's personally okay with it). His hobby of writing and talking people's ears off about video games has always felt like a perfect match. Feel free to let him talk your ear off on Twitter!: https://twitter.com/xxsammorenoxx
