I think we all saw this coming really. While Breath of the Wild’s sequel was slated to release this year, we still haven’t seen much about the upcoming, highly anticipated game. In fact, even the game’s title is still a mystery, as the dev team has speculated that it could be a spoiler. Because of this and other factors, Breath of the Wild’s sequel (henceforth called Breath of the Wild 2) will be delayed to 2023.

Specifically, in the announcement by Nintendo and Eiji Aonuma, it was revealed that the release window will likely be Spring 2023. So we essentially have somewhere in the realm of a year to wait, depending on whether it is early spring, or closer to something like June. We still don’t know much about the game, though the announcement does mention that while we will take to the skies in Breath of the Wild 2, that won’t be the only new frontier we see.

Does this mean that Breath of the Wild 2 might bridge the gap between Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Twilight Princess? Perhaps we will see Midna again or even a version of the Twilight Realm. It would be great to see how Breath of the Wild 2 merges concepts that haven’t been touched since their individual games.

I personally would enjoy playing as Zelda at some point as well. Alternately, having the opportunity to simply travel with Zelda as a companion would be fresh, new territory as well. In any case, with the new release window, I suspect we’ll get a lot more information about Breath of the Wild 2 this year. Hopefully, this means we’ll get a more focused Nintendo Direct presentation about the game as well.

Truth be told, with so many great games coming out this year, setting Breath of the Wild 2 into next year is probably a good idea. Elden Ring probably has Game of the Year tied down anyway, if not things like Horizon: Forbidden West and other heavy hitters from this year.
