On Tuesday evening, voting for nominees for the 94th Academy Awards officially closed. Audiences have spoken at the box office, critics have voted for their awards, and guilds have announced their favorite peers. However, for the first time in quite a while, everything still feels up in the air.

There is some minor news before the meat and potatoes of this article. Firstly, the Academy announced on Thursday (02/03) who will host the nomination ceremony. Comedienne Tracie Ellis Ross and actor Leslie Jordan will announce the nominees on February 8th, at 8:18 AM EST/5:18 AM PST. Show producer Will Packer announced previously that the show will have a host, but who it will be remains under wraps.

In other news, the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) released their official nominations which can be found here. For brevity’s sake, I’ll only take the highlights. Firstly, Best Actress had a culling of all the frontrunners, with Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), Kristen Stewart (Spencer), Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), and Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos) all being missed, with the only perceived top five contender making it in being Lady Gaga for her work in House of Gucci.

Additionally, No Time to Die had an underwhelming performance, missing in Best Picture despite showing up in multiple places during the shortlist phase. Multiple Best Actor contenders, including British-borne Andrew Garfield (tick, tick…BOOM!) and icon Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth) also missed. Frontrunners Benedict Cumberbatch and Will Smith made the cut though, solidifying them as the top two. With Academy members putting their pencils down, so too shall I.
