In 2014, Legendary Pictures would see the release of Godzilla, an American reboot about the eponymous kaiju that’s owned by Japanese film company Toho. It debuted with mostly positive reviews and more importantly was a box office hit that would lead to the MonsterVerse film franchise. Since Toho had only agreed to license the character to Legendary Pictures for three films and Godzilla vs Kong was that third film, it was expected that the MonsterVerse would focus on other kaiju after.

There’s a good chance that will still happen and we might see brand-new kaiju monsters or perhaps some other licensed ones will appear in the future. We had already known that an animated series titled Skull Island was in production but we now know that there’s more to come. In a press release by Apple, the company announced that they had ordered a MonsterVerse series to launch on their Apple TV+ service.

No title for the series has been given and neither has any date. In terms of the story, the press release provides a brief and vague synopsis that seems to place the series between the 2014 Godzilla and the 2019 Godzilla: King of The Monsters films. The press release has this to say: Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.

That synopsis might elicit a bit of a groan out of some. As important as dialogue and characters are to break up the action, most of the movies in the MonsterVerse aren’t as highly looked upon for their characters. I know I’m certainly hoping for some decent writing when it comes to the human characters.

One incredibly important aspect of the press release is that it mentions that Toho is involved and that the Godzilla character has been licensed to Legendary Pictures for the series. It’s important to recognize that this doesn’t confirm that they’ve provided the license for any future properties outside of this series and we of course don’t know how big of a presence there will even be. That being said, it’s hard to not be excited to see more of Legendary’s depiction of Godzilla.

It feels like a wonderful time to be a fan of the king of the monsters. The Godzilla Singular Point anime was fun and filled with great references, Godzilla vs Kong was entertaining to say the absolute least, and many are expecting Toho to potentially start their own movie series again for the 70th anniversary of the franchise. Whether it’s something that encapsulates political and global themes as some films have done, or simply a fun kaiju rumble, it’s obvious that many can’t wait to see more Godzilla.
