Primal Seed Announces Action Roguelike Never Mourn

I’m a sucker for a great story that does something most games don’t. That’s the beauty of gaming, letting you experience cool stories with great gameplay. It opens doors to worlds you might not have been able to experience before. Developer Primal Seed has just announced its new project Never Mourn, which immediately caught my attention.

We don’t know much about when Never Mourn will release just yet. In fact, the Steam page doesn’t have a release window or anything of the sort. However, the narrative for Never Mourn seems to be a very heartfelt, emotional experience. Here is what the press release has to say about Never Mourn.

“Set in a dark fantasy world, embody Irea, a desperate mother who will become a powerful necromancer in order to save her child.

Switch between life and death. Use both sides of your weapon to face hordes of enemies. Kill them off with using the scythe and use the other side to resurrect and protect them. Think ahead when composing your squad: each enemy you revive keeps all its specificities and skills.

Order your resurrected servants wisely, as reactivity and sense of analysis can save your life on the battlefield.

Irea will unlock access to a variety of spells & abilities each run. Learn and choose new spells for every playthrough. Unlock powers as you fulfill achievements and create your own builds. Each run will feel different: experiment with new ways to fight by picking different spells, skills, and passive abilities.

Travel in a complex and immersive Dark Fantasy universe alongside Irea. Make your path through various fantasy environments trying to recover your memories. Discover all mysterious places with their magic aura and threats… Be aware you’re not allowed backtracks: Irea only moves forward during her journey.”

The concept of Never Mourn alone captured my attention. I’m not a parent, but I am sure that experiencing Irea’s journey will be a powerful experience. Hopefully, the developers lean into the great premise they’ve created and weave the gameplay in. I could honestly see Never Mourn joining the ranks of some of the great Roguelikes out there if the story is done well.
