After being announced just last week, a new trailer has been released for Dragon Ball: The Breakers. If you happened to miss the news then you might be shocked that the next Dragon Ball game isn’t a fighting game or any sort of RPG. Instead, some cues are being taken from Dead By Daylight and other games of the like as the series heads into the asymmetrical gameplay genre.
We knew the general idea of the game involved seven ordinary citizens trying to survive against one raider. Although some non-combatant fan favorites such as Bulma and Oolong can be selected as a survivor, the monstrous raiders include the biggest villains from Dragon Ball with Cell, Frieza, and Majin Buu.
Thanks to a brand-new 11-minute trailer, we now know a lot more about the gameplay. Even more exciting is the announcement of the dates for the upcoming PC closed beta test. The goal of the survivors is to escape by activating the “Super Time Machine”. This is achieved by protecting a startup system. Survivors will have to find a set of power keys first and install them in precise locations to make the startup system appear though.
If the startup system is destroyed by the raider, the secondary form of escape will become available. Beacons around the map will appear to call an emergency time machine, allowing one or multiple survivors to escape. These can only be called one at a time, however, and the raider only needs to destroy one of these to fully prevent them from escaping.
Thankfully, there are ways to defend yourself or at least lengthen your time alive. Aside from various items and vehicles on the map, survivors can equip active and passive skills to use. This can include calling in a saiyan pod to instantly go to another place on the map for example.
What seems to be the best power for the survivors is the “Dragon Change” ability. This allows them to temporarily use the power of super warrior characters such as Goku, Vegeta, or Piccolo to momentarily fight back or quickly escape. It’s not enough to go toe-to-toe with the raiders, but it can certainly buy some time while the other survivors work towards escaping.
Meanwhile, the raider’s main goal is to stop the activation of the Super Time Machine and then prevent the survivors from escaping. If time runs out and the survivors have not escaped, the raider will win. Likewise, the raider can defeat every survivor for a complete victory. The most unique ability of the raider is that they can evolve.
In the case of Cell (it’s currently unknown if other raiders will work the same), he evolves by absorbing survivors and NPC civilians. This is what allows him to reach his next form as seen in the original manga and anime. Each evolution brings a change in power, skills, and special attacks that the raider can use, making them more formidable over time.
As if that didn’t sound challenging enough, each time a raider evolves, they can destroy one whole area of the map. Considering that Cell evolves three times, it sounds like the original map might be pretty large and good for hiding from the raider. With each evolution though, the remaining area will become a lot smaller and likely a lot tenser for the survivors.
Of course, it makes sense that the namesake of the series would appear in some sense. Seven dragon balls are placed around the map and can be used to summon the wish-granting dragon Shenron. A survivor can wish to increase every survivor’s Dragon Change level or upgrade their own to a whole-new level that gives them the exact appearance and power of their chosen warrior. Although it’s still for a momentary time, it is the only way to fight back against the raider with equal power.
Summoning Shenron isn’t limited to the survivors though. The raider can also have a wish granted by Shenron to either increase their evolution level or restore HP. Raiders will also be able to sabotage and stop a survivor from summoning Shenron and vice-versa. It sounds like it may not happen each match, but a huge scuffle over the summoning of a giant dragon does sound like a lot of fun.
The last tidbit of important information was shared at the end of the video. The PC closed beta test is set to be held across four sessions from December 3rd to December 4th. Each session is only four hours long, so players might have to work the beta times into their schedule to play. The exact times for the beta can also be seen below.
