Ahead of the release of Far Cry 6 next month, the company best known for climbing towers and repeatedly ignoring workplace harassment is doing another giveaway. It just happens to be the model which every Far Cry game has been playing by since its release. Do I even have to make it clear I’m talking about Far Cry 3 at this point?
A late release in 2012 that took everyone by surprise, the open-world island adventure contained leopards, murder, a 70-foot tall topless woman as a boss fight, and a whole load of bear scrotums. Of course, this was not the first game to do animal skinning, first-person, jump scares, or anything in particular, it simply did them well. You play as Jason “Rambo” Brody, a young man that had never fired a gun before going to this tropical island of murder, and yet he doesn’t want to leave. Spoiler Alert! Well, not entirely. Like most games over the past 12-15 years, there is a moral choice moment based around friendship or hunting.
I’d argue that the story is a little lacking in places, with one of my least favorite points all of the recent gaming being when you are tied up and escape, only to have an arsenal of heavy machinery. Yet, as I’m sure many know, the lead villain is a pure delight as Michael Mando beautifully captured a psycho you both love and hate. Vaas is so much of a fan-favorite that he’s part of the reason the game has been reproduced several times over. Other installments have been set in Asia, pre-historic Europe, the US, and now on October 7th, Cuba/South America.
So, where can you pick up the progenitor of every Far Cry game since 2012 for free? Through the Ubisoft store or Ubisoft Connect (formally Uplay). You will be able to pick it up until the 11th of September. If you don’t already own Far Cry 3, I suggest you pick it up soon.
