In terms of arcade racing games that aren’t unity asset flips that have very little art direction, there are precisely none. Ok, that’s not entirely true. There is Art of Rally for cartoon-ish graphics fans, and for those looking for more realistic graphics Project Cars 3 is very much an arcade racer. Well, it seems there may be a third contender releasing soon on Steam. Track & Burn is an upcoming free-to-play racer that is all nostalgic for when Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher weren’t married. Well, that’s the most roundabout way to bring up that the game desperately wants to tell you that the 70s were so cool, you guys.
According to the information we have, it is “a cross between legendary titles like Driver & Trackmania;” They are two diametrically opposed ideas, but let’s roll with it. You’ll spend your time burning digital rubber off the tail end of a car that is close enough but also distinct enough from Ford’s seminal muscle car, the Mustang. A car so cemented in the idea of the late 60s and early 70s, there are few other cars you could probably think of. One can only assume that the driving will also be heavy like the Driver games, as you throw the car into a corner and cross your fingers that you don’t go flying through someone’s front door.
The Trackmania influence appears to be setting timed laps and creating custom courses. They will likely be uploaded and shared through Steam and you’ll be swearing when someone beats lap time on a new track in 0.3 femtoseconds. This is where I get to point out that Track & Burn will be releasing into free-to-play early access soon, so one might assume it may be to curb this level of brown mustang spillage and possibly add more design tools. As far as I’m understanding, you’ll have one backdrop for your 70s racing action, burning rubber outside a row of typical Boston-New York townhouses. That’s not bad to begin with, but it may be underwhelming to some after a short while.
