During E3 2021, Square Enix announced the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, containing remastered versions of the first six titles in the Final Fantasy franchise. This announcement seems to have had some unexpected ramifications for the versions of Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI on Steam though. According to the Steam page for both Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI, they are to be delisted from Steam on July 27th.

The interesting thing about this is that Final Fantasy IV is not getting this particular treatment, at least not at the time of writing. Instead, the steam page for Final Fantasy IV has been renamed to Final Fantasy IV (3D Remake).

Instead, the Steam page for each game simply states at the top, “This game will no longer be available for purchase after July 27, 2021. Instead, please purchase the pixelated remaster version of “FINAL FANTASY VI,” coming soon.” Despite the strangeness of this, it is important to note that the port of Final Fantasy VI that is currently available on Steam has had considerable negative feedback due to bugs, and due to the graphics.

Final Fantasy V’s current Steam version has mostly positive reviews on Steam, so I’m a little confused by how they decided this. Will the current versions be removed from mobile storefronts as well?  If you want either of these two games in their current versions, I would suggest picking them up on Steam now, during the Summer Sale. However, they aren’t discounted, so you might decide to just wait for the release of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster versions instead.

Either way, at least the first six Final Fantasy games will be on the Steam platform together. I’m interested to see the pixel version of Final Fantasy III since it was never released in the West. Instead, a 3D version was released for the Nintendo DS. The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster versions will be released individually on July 29th, though only on PC and Mobile devices. Why not Switch Square Enix?
