Game Pass is great, but Xbox fans are wondering where the new exclusives are. Xbox Game Studios is an expansive lineup of developers but the real results come in games released. We might be some time away from getting our hands on Fable, but we do know the developers are taking a creative approach to making this one happen. Instead of using a popular engine to build the game, the Fable engineers will be using an internal Microsoft-built engine which could prove to be a beneficial choice.

The Software Engineer job listing details that Turn10, the developers of the Forza series, are going to be using their ForzaTech engine for the newest Fable game. The listing includes that the team will be “enriching the toolset” to fit the needs of a next-gen RPG. It’s really interesting to see the ForzaTech engine getting a high-profile game like this. It’s also a huge reason why, if it pays off, Microsoft could put itself in a really great position for the future.

With a successful in-house engine to use on Xbox Game Studios projects, the Xbox family could get to know their own engine very well over the next decade. As it becomes more second-hand to developers, we could likely see more done with less in terms of utilizing ForzaTech over Unreal Engine or others like it. Why does that matter?

Well, when you spend more time with a game engine, you get to know how to make the most of it. Unreal Engine is something a lot of game developers know well, but an internal engine that you’ve created from the ground-up is an even better tool to build games. While it won’t replace other game engines on every Xbox project, it’s exciting to see the ForzaTech engine get some exposure outside of the racing genre. Now we wait patiently for that Fable release date. It literally can’t come soon enough.
