It’s exciting seeing games come out of seemingly nowhere. Valheim is a great example and the latest booming game online. It’s the latest phenomenon on PC, a Viking epic that features elements of Minecraft and Runescape for a new generation of gamers. As of this week, Valheim and its dev team, Iron Gate AB, are celebrating a huge milestone: five million sales.
If you’re not familiar with the game yet, here’s the gist. Valheim is a survival & exploration game set in a fantasy world inspired by Viking culture and Norse mythology. The procedurally-generated world offers some incredible PvE adventures like a lot of our favorite MMOs over the years. It’s a growing phenomenon in PC gaming and there seem to be no signs of slowing down now. At $20, the asking price is quite low for how much people seem to be getting out of this game.
There’s no telling what publisher Coffee Stain Publishing expected from this game. My guess is that the quick success was not necessarily written in the stars. Games like this launch all the time without immediate success. Since its Steam Early Access launch on February 2, however, the game has found an immediate audience and plenty of supporters. On Twitch, Valheim has logged more than 35 million hours of gameplay on the video streaming platform. If you’re playing Valheim, then let us know in the comments how you feel about the game.
