“Say wouldn’t you like to know what’s going on in my mind?” As some Welsh woman once said, you’ve probably never heard of her. Though she did sing another song about some nice bloke called “Goldfinger,” you’d probably like him, he’s got a few design ideas for islands in the middle of the ocean that could be useful soon enough. As useful as Rebellion’s sequel to the cult-classic Evil Genius which is set to release on the 30th of March this year.
As a strong fan of the management games of the late 90s and mid-00s, I can’t wait. This sequel looks stylistically similar to the spiritual successor of one of Lisa’s (and my own) favorite games of the 90s (Theme Hospital), Two Point Hospital, it brings that splash of color and fun animation to the series many have nostalgia for. Now, over a month from the game’s release, Rebellion has released a full 10-minutes of gameplay with developer commentary.
The new Evil Genius 2 gameplay showing off lair-building sets me back to one of Bullfrog’s other classics – and something that EA just won’t release a proper version of – Dungeon Keeper… Mostly due to the idea of a tropical island in the mid-Atlantic with a volcano atop it. Similar to the original game of the mid-00s, you will be tasked with stopping Johnny English from taking pictures of your evil plans to make a Meringue of death, or whatever it is you do with a surplus of eggs and nuclear weapons. All of which is playing host to the colorful cast of highly characterized fellow villains, minions (Yes, they are dressed in yellow, but not those ones), and the super-spies.
On March 30th, you’ll be setting up traps, hiring people dressed in yellow based on their ability to not look bad in that color, and seeking world domination. That’s the name of the game after-all; Well, subtitle at least. The narratively-driven affair coming to Steam will see you attempt to stave off five of the world’s superpowers with their own super-spies all attempting to thwart your confectionery-based villainy. Personally? I can’t wait, I just love torturing men in my dungeons full of whips and chains… and evil plans too!
