I decided to go back and watch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse this week because of the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PlayStation 5. In this movie, Miles Morales takes on the Spider-Man role, and must learn how to use his powers to stop Kingpin. He doesn’t do this alone though, he has the help of other characters who have taken on the Spider-Man mantle in different universes. I forgot how great and funny this movie is at times until watching it again. One source of humor is that it introduces us to all these unique characters from the series. It allows us to learn their background, which is great for fans who only know the Peter Parker version.
These versions include Spider-Man Noir, Peni Parker with her spider mech suit, as well as Spider-Ham, a pig version of the hero. Yeah that’s right, he is a pig. Additionally, there is a Peter Parker in this movie who helps Miles become Spider-Man. This Peter Parker seems to be an older version of Spider-Man, and we learn that things haven’t been going so well for him. With these new versions of Spider-Man we also get to see some new iterations of villains as well; some even go unnoticed until they actually reveal themselves over the course of the plot. There is also a new version of New York City that shows off slightly altered ads from what we know. The name of a product in an ad would be a parody version of the original for example.
The animation in this film is also fantastic, and is done in a style that lets it seem like a comic book brought to life. Throughout the film we can see this at certain points; For example, when Miles hits someone we can see a BANG! appear on the screen. You can tell the animators took their time on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as each version of Spider-Man has their own unique style. I thought this was a nice touch as it really helps you realize that these heroes don’t belong in this world.
Into the Spider-Verse also has a great story that was both funny and heart-breaking. They even made us feel really sympathetic to the Kingpin at some points. It also has a great soundtrack that really goes well with the movie. It really focuses and resonates with Miles as they are from artists who he may listen to. However, the songs also do a great job of conveying emotion at certain points in the film. There are also a lot of Spider-Man references in this film that reference other films, tv shows and comics centered around Spider-Man.
The story pacing is fantastic, and Miles and Peter do have great character arcs. Now I know the story isn’t 100% realistic, but it does feature unique characters we haven’t seen before. It really is a nice change from the normal Spider-Man story. Not only does it have its own origin story, but it also provides another person for kids to look up to or empathize with due to his age and race. If you haven’t seen this yet and are a massive Spider-Man fan, you are missing out. I would go so far to say that it is one of the best Spider-Man films out there.
