Bridge Constructor and Walking Dead fans are in for a treat as ClockStone brings us Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead.  This new iteration of the popular Bridge Constructor franchise features the world and characters from The Walking Dead TV series.  I was lucky enough to play Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead on Xbox One, but it is also available on PlayStation 4, PC and mobile devices.

Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead has us constructing bridges in order to escape a massive horde of Walkers or dangerous raiders. The story is spilt into chapters, with each chapter containing a certain amount of levels. As you progress and complete each level, you learn more about the game’s story as well as its characters.

Fans of The Walking Dead can spot some familiar faces during the game, with fan favorite Daryl making an appearance. However, you will mostly be playing as another character from show known as Eugene. Your group will move from abandoned warehouses to the dirty Walker filled city, as they try to build paths and eliminate their foes so that the characters can survive. It is really interesting to see what else Eugene and the gang has done that hasn’t been in the show. It is also fun to show off how smart Eugene is.

We are given this knowledge in cool cutscenes that look more like the comics of The Walking Dead rather than the TV show. This comic theme continues in the story and carries on in the style of the game’s locations as well as its characters.

Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead 2

In each level of Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead, you can have multiple cool and unique ways of killing Walkers that we haven’t seen before. Some characters in the game also have special abilities that they can use in a mission. These can be things like Daryl’s crossbow or Eugene’s Walker distractor, which can lure Walkers away from you.

Characters can also sometimes be moved so that they can escape or interact with items. An example of this is switches that can be used to to drop a container on a large horde of Walkers. In these movement segments, characters can also use their special ability. This is done in parts and characters can have up to five commands for you to give them.

So for example, if you move a character left they will move all the way until they have another thing to interact with. The act of having them move left uses up one command. I think this is a great mechanic, since you will have to set these up at the same time as you construct the bridge. This really makes you have to think in order to complete the puzzle/mission.

Now we get to the main part of the game. Building bridges in this game can be really difficult and challenging. You really have to think about weight and distribution of people, hordes of Walkers, and vehicles. This continues to get more challenging as you progress in the games story. As you progress you can get different materials to use just like other games in the genre. You are able to use materials like wood, wire and steel. This helps make the game less boring, especially since the game gives you a number of different types of bridges to build in multiple locations.

In addition to this you can also earn badges in each level of the game. This is the Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead‘s challenge mode, as it sets a required amount of materials you can use in each level. You can use as many materials as you want, but if you manage to achieve victory using less materials than is required you will achieve the star. This gives the game some re-playability as you can go back and try to perfect each level.

Another great feature is that you can save structures you build. The game gives you five save slots that you can load into any level of the game. This really saves you time on building the same structure again and again in each level. There is a lot of trial and error in Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead, but it really is satisfying when you succeed.

I did struggle with this game though and I think it is probably too hard for someone who hasn’t played a bridge sim before. Now the game did have some helpful tips at the start in order to get you started. It also has a construction guide that you can use whenever you want which is a nice addition. However, when I got a new material like wire, I don’t think the game did a good enough job of explaining how to use it. At least, not compared to how it explained the wood.

Another problem I had with the game was that the cursor wouldn’t be responsive at times. Sometimes I would move it and it wouldn’t go anywhere. Other times, when I tried to move it over one of the materials, it wouldn’t lock onto it. This makes me think that the App or PC version of this game could very well be better.

There was also some lag in some of the levels, which made trying to solve puzzles more annoying. All-in-all this game really does challenge you, and does a great job of incorporating a new Walking Dead story into a game. If you are a fan of both franchises then I would highly recommend that you get Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead.
