Easily one of the best evolutions in gaming is doing something so unrealistic and fun, it was only built from that one segment in Top Gear. Rocket League is stupid in all the right ways, and I genuinely love it for being simple in concept, yet hard to master. That said, I wasn’t a fan of the cosmetic/online service phase the entire game went through over the last few years, I’m not fond of online service games in most cases. Though that is a conversation for another day.
For the past couple of months, we’ve known the game that is the sequel to the worst named game ever, “Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars,” would be going free-to-play. However, there was no date set until yesterday of when this shift would come for the acrobatic rocket-powered cars playing sports. Next Wednesday (September 23rd) Rocket League will be shifting into the realm of free-to-play for all platforms, as announced on Twitter and Psyonix’s blog.

Along with going free-to-play, it will also finally be releasing on the Epic Games Store with a Llama-Rama event soon after the free-to-play release. Along with this there are groundwork updates being added to the game today in an update They are updating the bot difficulty and adding a new quick chat, menus updates, and achievement changes. Along with this on the free-to-play launch, there will be new tournaments and the start of the first season of the game, akin to other online games of late.
If you pick up the game on the Epic Games Store between September 23rd and 23rd of October, you’ll get a $10 coupon for anything purchased that’s $14.99 or over. Along with all this, there will a new pack system, such as the Endo starter and Jäger packs with in-game credits, boosts, and cosmetics such as explosions, wheels, and trails. All of which seems like we’re delving into the same issue as before.
It will be interesting to see how this affects the game in the coming months and years, as according to Steamdb, the game is still moderately popular. In the last week alone, the game’s lowest point seems to be about 18,000 players with peaks of 69,000+, making it last longer than most games that are 5-years old. You can wishlist the game right now on the Epic Games Store and get an update of when it becomes available for free on the storefront.
