The full title of this game couldn’t even fit in our header. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Infinite Combate, which I’ll be politely calling Dungeon – IC for this review, is a mouthful. It’s also a full-fledged recreation of the popular manga and anime series in game-form. Like a lot of other isekai or accidental travel series, this game is all about ending up in a place you don’t recognize. How does this fantasy world shape up as a video game? Quite well.

In the game, RPGs are just a way of life. The conventions of role-playing titles just happen to be how people in this world live. You follow two main characters, Bell Cranel and Ais Wallenstein, through this world as they both seek fortune in the game’s world. There are heavy visual novel elements as you work through dialogue that doesn’t feature much in the animation department. The art style and design are great, but I’d rather we didn’t see little twitches in the characters to show they’re talking. We can hear/read that they are, so don’t bother us with the weird movements.

As far as gameplay goes, you essentially have two attack buttons and a dodge. It’s fair to say that fans of this game might not care that gameplay is so simplistic. Non-fans, however, might feel like all the reading for such shallow combat isn’t worth their time. That’s up to you to decide, but as a non-fan of the anime series, I didn’t mind the simplicity. The story was enough to make me want to keep going. Character progression comes through combat skill points as well as finding new items to improve your two characters.

If you don’t watch the show, this game could be a great way to try the world out before diving into the main stories. I think the best thing the game has going for it is strong main characters. Unfortunately, the gameplay leaves a lot to be desired. That’s not to say it’s easy, however. If you don’t take time to level up your characters and grind a bit, strong enemies absolutely devastate you. It’s funny how many times I’d get rolling and forget to level up a bit on weaker enemies only to be demolished in a new dungeon.

The difficulty isn’t high and the gameplay isn’t all that complicated or interesting, but I still enjoyed the game. Fans of the anime and manga will certainly enjoy it even more. As far as anime-inspired games go, I’m happy to say this is not one that crashes and burns. Fans and newcomers alike can find something to love about this fantasy world, even if the actual playthrough is a bit lackluster.
