I’m sure I’m not alone, but every time I see a new Souls-like getting a trailer, I get that moment of “and there goes another day of work.” Yes, I like many others love them and eat them like breakfast cereal. Mortal Shell was announced back in April, on (oddly enough) April 1st, bringing all that is usual in an independent Souls-like. Let the vague plot, dark fade-ins, and fade-outs, clips of battles against some larger than your mum, and uncertain Dark Souls themes commence to get the angry mob riled up. You know, the usual roller-coaster of being excited for a game before a release date is announced. This leads to seeing more gameplay, finding out a release date, pre-order, and then complaining that it is not made by FromSoft three minutes after release.

I think a majority of us found Mortal Shell way back in June at the PC Gaming show. Though unlike years gone by, most weren’t bored to death by its presentation. Yes, the brief one-minute glimpse into the sadistic world that will chew you up and defecate you back out before you try, die, and try again, had quite a few of us handing over that gif of Fry with his money in lieu of payment and pre-orders. Now, a little while on from that showcase of the not so immortal, you can throw your money at the devs. Announced and revealed yesterday in a new trailer, Mortal Shell will release on the 18th of August following a largely successful beta.

However, there is more to this announcement that will further infuriate someone for no good reason. Mortal Shell will release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC players, though those that must have Steam to suckle up to will have to wait until 2021. Yes, it is a timed-exclusive for the Epic Games store, so expect to see some very angry people moaning about having to download a piece of software and create a new login. Mortal Shell will release for $29.99 (€29.99, £24.99, or local equivalent) across all available stores and consoles.

Chief Executive at publisher Playstack, Harvey Elliott, spoke of the pre-release reception being fairly positive. Meanwhile, the four co-founders of developer Cold Symmetry spoke about their passion to make a Souls-like that is true to the source. I know like many Souls/Borne/Sekiro and Souls-like fans, I’ll be waiting to see the final release in just under two weeks. Just over four months following the initial announcement.
