There was a time where I was skeptical about Let’s Play channels. Why would I want to watch people play video games when I can play them myself? Yet, I gave them a try and found myself hooting and hollering to true hilarity. Youtube channels like Super Best Friends Play, Continue? Show, and several others have years of quality content, but my current favorite is Chris O’ Neill’s (better known as OneyNG) OneyPlays.
Created back in 2012 and regularly-uploading since about 2016, Chris has had several of his friends on the show as regulars. Most frequently, he had his pals who go by “Ding Dong” and “Julian” as he played through several games like Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon Red, and more. Currently, his frequent guests are Zach Hadel (Psychicpebbles), Joshua Tomar (a voice actor), and Lyle Rath (another voice actor/editor).
The series that has gained a lot of support from the fans and spawned more than a half-dozen videos is the gang playing Worms Reloaded. Easily accessible, the group of four have a blast playing this and jovially trash-talking each other. It’s important that the boys are having fun while creating their content and don’t feel forced to overreact, and it’s clear they’re having the time of their life with this game.
Aside from Worms, Oney and his friends also venture to play obscure/older titles instead of opting to play the hottest new release. Recently, they’re also running through the Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns, including a mod where Rochelle’s model resembles Motifa, a character they dubbed in their Grand Theft Auto V videos. The skill level on display doesn’t have to be elite to make for an entertaining video, which is what we get from the laid-back/mischievous players.
This is the best time to get into the channel, as the upload schedule is stacked. There was a refresh period earlier this year where uploads were not as frequent but it seems that the channel is chock full of content right now, as we are getting at least one video a day, including some well-put-together compilations, such as a six-hour “Best of Zach” and “Best of Traumatizing Tomar” making for great long watches.
On top of the great videos, the merchandise made available representing the show is a treat. In the aftermath of a hilarious Freddie Freaker bit, Oney actually got in touch with the people who released the wacky 1980’s commercial and were able to license official merch of the strange yellow monster. The capitalization of the merchandising is smart and the “buy our stuff” approach is forgone, instead just having a very brief ad at the start of videos, which is much appreciated.
As someone who has dozens upon dozens of subscriptions, there are only a few I go out of my way to drop what I’m doing and watch immediately, and OneyPlays is on that small list. Whether Chris is dropping a weird hypothetical, Zach is off on one of his hilarious tangents, or a Tomar Emerald is in the equation, it’s always a good time watching an OneyPlays video. There’s a certain guarantee knowing that clicking on one of their videos will bring laughs and that’s what makes the channel special.
