There are a lot of games I can’t really believe ever became Nintendo Switch exclusives. One example is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, which really did a great job of making the originals feel like they had a current-gen successor. Now, the Deadly Premonition series joins the ranks of other Switch exclusives that show Nintendo is willing to diversify its content offerings.

Deadly Premonition first released in 2010 as a third-person horror open-world experience. I don’t think the game is necessarily scary so much as it is creepy. The real impact of its release was the surprising success it found. In its first three weeks, the game sold 50,000 copies and overtook Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Mass Effect 2, and Left 4 Dead 2 in sales on Amazon. The atmosphere of its creepy setting and story helped a lot of gamers scratch that Resident Evil itch in a new way.

The game came before the huge boom of visual novels, but Deadly Premonition in many ways proved that the idea of video games as art wasn’t so crazy. Like a lot of Japanese-developed games, the story was a wild ride of twists, turns and mystery. There are a lot of layers to this game that helped it to develop a cult following. Now, some 10 years later, a sequel comes to the Switch.

The release trailer is less of a trailer and more like the opening credits to a TV show. With some Breaking Bad style music and fun visuals, the game sets its dark tone from the get-go. We can’t wait to get our hands on this one for sure. Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise, will arrive July 10, 2020, worldwide, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch family of systems. It will be available both digitally via the Nintendo eShop and at retail for $49.99.
