Samurai Jack wasn’t necessarily a huge hit, but it garnered an adoring collection of viewers. Fans of the animated sleeper hit have long awaited to see the return of its titular character. Well, he’s back in Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time, announced a couple of days ago for PC, Switch, PS4, and Xbox One.

The final season of Samurai Jack released in 2017, 13 years after the show was initially left on a major cliffhanger. Writer-director Genndy Tartakovsky worked on Powerpuff Girls and Dexter’s Laboratory for Cartoon Network before debuting Samurai Jack in 2001. The show stars Jack and begins with the samurai nearly defeating the ultimate evil being known as Aku. Jack uses a magic katana capable of cutting through virtually anything and his adventures constantly take him to all stretches of feudal Japan.

According to Adult Swim Games, “Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time is set before Jack’s final fight with Aku, an evil entity that trapped Jack in alternate timelines throughout human history. Jack will have to fight through several different timelines in order to reach Aku and defeat him.” The game will be on display at PAX East for Adult Swim Games’ panel on Friday, February 28.

I think a lot of people between the ages of 20-30 enjoyed watching Cartoon Network. Just passed its heyday in the mid to late 90s, shows like Samurai Jack resonate with a lot of Generation Z. It was one of the first shows on the channel to bridge the gap between children’s show and adult animation. Later, shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Adventure Time, and Regular Show would stretch the animation genre even thinner to cover more viewerships.

Its initial first four seasons aired on Cartoon Network from 2001 to 2004. That means we’re 19 years removed from the show’s beginning. It’ll be interesting to see where Jack ends up after this new adventure.
