Totally Accurate Battle Simulator is chaotic, creative, and a refreshing take on the strategy genre. In April 2019, the game hit Steam Early Access. Just after the holiday season, the game released for Xbox Game Pass members as a Game Preview title. While still a work in progress, the game’s energy and room for violent nonsense makes it a total blast to play.

Landfall Games is a particularly great indie developer. Titles like Clustertruck, Air Brawl and Square Brawl point to a very specific theme in their developed games: cartoonish violence. They’ve also published a fairly popular title, Stick Fight: The Game, for developer Landfall West. In Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, the same love for the ridiculous and innovative is present. At $20 while still in progress, I’m not 100% sure I’d dish out that cash for a game like this without having tried it. Luckily, Xbox Game Pass is a service that still pays for itself over and over again.

As a Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you can play Totally Accurate Battle Simulator for free with an active subscription. Thanks to the service, I gave Totally Accurate Battle Simulator a try and loved it. The joys of the game far outweigh its rough edges, and with some more progress, the title could be truly wonderful.

Physics-Based Brawls from the Dawn of Man to Now

The game’s premise is simple. You’re given a themed sandbox-style map, and place combatants on the battlefield in various places. The game features all sorts of fighters, all donning beady cartoon eyes and rag doll-like movements. Once the battlefield is all set, you can dive into the battle at the press of the button. Watch from a bird’s eye view as the warriors demolish each other, or hop into the shoes of a single fighter and control their valiant efforts.

The joy of this game for me is setting up ridiculous matchups. I had a lot of fun pitting a slew of 30 cavemen against a wooly mammoth. Unfortunately, unchecked creativity reveals a huge flaw of the game at this point. When loading up the screen for a massive battle, you can’t even make it 2 seconds into hitting play before the movement lags and essentially breaks. As a Game Preview title, it’s not a surprise. Still, those who consider buying the game at this point should know that more modest battles are the only ones that run without error or issue.

Final Word – Should I Buy Totally Accurate Battle Simulator?

If you have Xbox Game Pass, a few hours toying around in Totally Accurate Battle Simulator are well worth the download. The game is a ton of fun, and watching rag doll physics take over in matchups like sword-caster versus trebuchet ensures hilarity and lots of funny moments. If you’re looking to buy the game, I think $20 is fair for this title. As of now, there are still some serious bugs, not to mention, the actual extent to which you can explore gameplay is limited to your creativity. Even then, you can see every matchup relatively early into your time with the game.

For that reason, I’d say Totally Accurate Battle Simulator is a no-brainer for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, and a definite maybe for purchasers depending on your love for strategy and simulation games with physics-based engines.
