The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt became one of the most successful RPGs of the decade, if not history, after it was released in 2015. Despite this popularity, the game never reached the heights of many other games on Steam, with much of this focusing on concurrent users. While it sold well, it reached a peak of 92,268 not long after its release.

Typically, the majority of games see a certain amount of drop-off in the weeks and months after release. Naturally, this affected Wild Hunt. However, the game has seen quite a large boost in popularity on Steam over the past few days. According to reports, it just surpassed the 100,000 concurrent player mark for this first time in its history. This has led to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt breaking into the top five games on Steam again.

While it’s unlikely to take the top spot, this is quite impressive for a game that’s almost five years old. The resurgence in popularity shouldn’t come as a surprise to many people. Not only is it a game that large numbers of players keep coming back to, but Netflix’s adaption of The Witcher book series was quite successful. This undoubtedly had a knock-on effect on the games themselves, and perhaps the original book series.

While many players would have returned to the game franchise because of the Netflix show, which was recently renewed for a second season; it may have also introduced new fans to the IP. Coupled with this has been the Steam Christmas sales, which saw many of the Witcher titles get large discounts. While the concurrent player figure looks like it may keep growing for the next while, this will inevitably stop.

Though new players will continue to be active, both on Steam and elsewhere; older players may soon move on to other titles. However, it’s nice to know that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still enjoying an active user-base five years after being released.
