In an almost fittingly dystopian turn of events, Fallout 1st is spawning a class war between players.

A 12-month membership of the new subscription service for Fallout 76 runs you $100. Sure, the monthly payment plan fee of $12.99 is a bit easier to stomach, but it costs you more in the long run. The subscription gets you in-game items, unlimited storage, and other perks. Unfortunately, that means it is somewhat easy to make out who is paying for the top-tier experience, and who is not. Keiran put it quite nicely when he said, “…the words angry and upset wouldn’t be enough for hardcore Fallout fans in my opinion.” Well, we’re seeing that come to fruition as players hunt down premium subscribers in an act of unscripted but totally understandable rebellion.

Something people love about the Fallout games is the picture they paint of a world gone wrong. Warmongering, income inequality, and greed run wild until the planet literally explodes itself with nukes. I’ve always found it funny that people often fail to point out just how closely this reality resembles ours. Obviously, we’re not fighting off nuclear radiation sickened Ghouls or swatting away Radroaches, but damn, if the environmental influences aren’t eerily identical.

So, what are we to do in real life? That’s up for debate. The Fallout 76 players made their decision: rebel against the rich and fight back against the people central to the hellish situation they find themselves in. Please know, I’m not advocating for this to occur in real life. All I’m saying is that Fallout 76 players are pushing back against people with disposable income who wish to buy a better experience in the face of greed and scummy practices via Bethesda. It’d be wonderful to see more of that as we wrap up a fourth decade in a row that has seen the top 1% of Americans make 25 times more money than the bottom 99%.

Violence isn’t the answer, but class consciousness sure is.
