Electronic Arts have quarterly conference calls to discuss finances, growth, and what the company has cooking in the future. According to Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at Niko Partners, break-out hit Apex Legends has passed 70 million lifetime players as of this quarter.

Apex Legends is a spin-off of the Titanfall series, a shooter whose second entry was widely acclaimed, yet a flop. The giant robots and parkour that helped define the game aren’t present in Apex Legends, but it has managed to stand on its own through solid gunplay and its combination of hero Shooters and Battle Royales. Apex Legends was a game that came out of nowhere, having little build-up or press before launch. However, it quickly became a dark horse in the Battle Royale genre, slotting alongside the likes of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite.

The weekly player average in season 3 is stated to have surpassed that of season 2, further signifying the game’s growth. EA now apparently considers Apex Legends to be a core franchise, though with the information available so far, it’s hard to tell if Apex Legends is considered to be its own franchise distinct from Titanfall. It’s also currently unknown how much EA has made off of Apex Legends alone, which monetizes itself with Apex Coins to buy cosmetic packs, though it likely contributed to EA’s overall growth in the digital sphere (above).

The Apex Legends player base is likely to grow even further. Part of the recent EA news is that the company is partnering with Valve to bring EA Access and various EA games to Steam. Bringing Apex Legends to Steam is, of course, part of those plans, though the news post states that it will be out next year. EA is also further eyeing bringing the game to mobile and other platforms – likely next-gen stuff like the PlayStation 5.
