The Earth Defense Force series is a mad one. The world is invaded by an alien race, and by using their weaponry, they have just made every one of our insects horrifyingly huge. As a premise, it sounds like the most stereotypical Japanese thing you can think of; see Godzilla. It shouldn’t surprise you that it is one of the most popular, in a cult-like status, in the west from its early days on the PS2. A bit like the Yakuza series, and Judgment, it has adapted with its marginal fanbase in the west.

The most recent installment Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain, developed by Yukes, released earlier this year to a mixed response. I found it to be about a good switch up; not a place where the series should rest, but a nice change of pace. Then a few months ago, I wrote about the release of Earth Defense Force 5 on PC. Now it seems Yuke’s latest game is coming to Steam, as Iron Rain will release this Tuesday.

The PC port will feature 50+ missions of horrifying bug, robot, and lizard-based nightmares in five difficulties. Character customization, as was introduced this time around with specific hairstyles, gender, weight, voice, and outfit choices. Four mobile soldiers, with hundreds of weapons and items to rain hell down upon the gigantic beasts. As well as online and offline play.

I wouldn’t suggest Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain to everyone, though if you are looking for something ridiculous to play with friends, now is the time. Without the PS4’s useless online services getting in the way, there is almost no excuse to not join some friends online and take down the enormous titans that are some insects (as well as robots and lizards). That is aside from hating everyone and no one else wanting to play a weird game about killing bugs.
