Alright folks, buckle up, it’s discourse time. A few weeks back I posted something about how Geno sucks and isn’t worthy to be in Smash. I’m imagining a hypothetical person asking, “Hey, if Geno doesn’t belong in Smash, who do you think should?” Good question! I’ve actually had a character in mind and it isn’t some stupid puppet with no cultural impact.

That character is 2B, from Nier: Automata! She would be a significant pick in that, like Joker and Persona 5, she’d be representing one of the most popular modern JRPGs. There is already a precedent of Nier: Automata crossing over with other games, with 2B’s appearance in Tekken 7 and an upcoming Nier: Automata themed raid for Final Fantasy XIV, so why not Smash as well?

You, the nerd, may say, “ugh, another anime sword character.” To that, I say that you’re a fool. While she’s primarily associated with her light swords, there are a variety of weapons in Nier: Automata. She could use the combat bracers for neutral jabs and bust out a good ol’ spear for dash attacks; while a lot of her attacks could use her light swords, she can swing around large swords for her smash attacks, switching them out with the weird magic-technology fusion fueling her. My point is, there are a lot of ways to make her deviate from a standard sword character in terms of function and appearance.

As for her specials and other moves, they could take the form of the Pod Programs in the game. Neutral B could be the Bomb program and players could hold down the button and release to drop more explosives in front of 2B. Down B could be the Spear program and could be used to generate spears around 2B to knock players into the air. Side B could use the Volt program and could be used to stun people. The Wire program could be used for 2B’s grabs and, uh, I guess she’ll just hang onto her pod and fly up for her Up B.

How about the rest of the DLC content? The way I see it, the stage could be the ruined city that acts as the game’s hub, or the factory where the raid at the beginning of the game and the “become as gods” sequence takes place. I could also see the Tower from Automata‘s endgame being included; you may say that that’s a spoiler, but remember, Smash pretty much spoiled a bunch of MOTHER 3‘s endgame with the inclusion of New Pork City. Spoilers does not matter to Sakurai.

There is also a whole bunch of music to draw from, even without the need to remix things. The action version of City Ruins, A Beautiful Song, Birth of a Wish, Bipolar Nightmare and Dependent Weakling would rule. If we’re talking remixes, Smash has gotta get its own version of Weight of the World; that song feels like a full representation of the game and like, come on, Final Fantasy XIV is getting its own version. I would also honestly love if stuff from the first Nier showed up like the tracks Blu-Bird and Shadowlord (though probably its second half) would be absolute bangers.

Heck, if Platinum Games ever ports Nier: Automata to the Switch, announcing it alongside 2B in Smash would be good advertising, like how Hero acts as an advertisement for Dragon Quest XI S. The question has been raised before, having the game on Switch is something people would like, and 2B would be a welcome addition to the Smash cast if that was the case.
