It has become a bit of a joke to say the Ubisoft are just making the same game over and over again, a joke that’s got plenty of truth to it. Though one could argue since September 2001, Rockstar Games have been making the same game about gangsters over and over again. So it isn’t surprising to see an article on Gamesindustry.biz stating, “Ubisoft isn’t abandoning its open worlds.

In short, the article by James Batchelor, UK editor for Gamesindustry.biz, is about this year’s major release by the publisher. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is set to be quite large when it comes to some of the publisher’s other work like early Assassin’s Creed games or even Beyond Good and Evil. That being said, I’ve been banging on about the size of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and the fact I’ll never see the ending unless I stuff a pillow up my t-shirt and buy lots of ice cream. I like one of their larger titles, and I liked both Watch_Dogs 2 and Far Cry 3, which are both smaller if you call a fly smaller than a black hole enveloping a planet.

Why is that important? Well, Yves Guillemot has come out to say that Ubisoft’s goal is, “to make sure you can have a Unity within an Odyssey.” One would assume this to be in reference to Batchelor’s earlier comments that Assassin’s Creed Unity was a shorter game than Odyssey‘s collisional size. Yves comments go on to state that, “If you want to have a story of 15 hours, you can have it, but you can also have other stories.” A claim that only rings true in the likes of Odyssey if you purchase many of the microtransactions that are prevalent.

Batchelor also goes on to question the sustainability of the industry if games are becoming bigger and bigger, though the price tag staying the same. With games staying about $60 in the US and £50 in the UK, could the games industry continue with this price tag without sacrificing the size and scope of the games? Yves says, “It is sustainable because the world is big and the number of players that can play our games is immense.” Going on to state, “What we’ve seen in the last few years is the number of players that play our games is constantly growing.”
