As I made clear in the Rebel Galaxy Outlaw review, I have a penchant (for lack of a French word) for being abused by something with three bums for a face and a big hammer. My exact words were, “Yes, being inseminated from the rear by a long pointy thing four times a year is more enjoyable.” Though while I’ve been having this BDSM relationship with FromSoftware, I’ve hardly stepped outside or enjoyed the emulators of being smacked about by the former host of University Challenge. As evidenced in the Dark Devotion review.

However, there is one of the many imitators that I’ve always wanted to try ahead of the release of its’ sequel next month. That game is The Surge, otherwise known as techno future Dark Souls. Well, it seems ahead of the release The Surge 2 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, Deck 13 are allowing you to try the first for free before buying on Steam. If you do enjoy it, you will also be able to buy the game and all the DLC for 75% off on PC.

I don’t think it is a spoiler to talk about the few opening moments, though if you are that averse to the setup, you can try the game now. The game opens with a cinematic of Umbrella, Abstergo, ATMOS, Momcorp, SKYNET, and Weyland-Yutani levels of malevolence promising the better life our character wants. What is that better life? Well, it is set up much like James Cameron’s Avatar, you are a man with some legs that work about as well as most controls do once you’ve started a Dark Souls for the first time. One pan of the camera and a wheelchair later; and our character is set up.

Following this, Creo (super evil corp) does to this man what can only be described as torture porn. One scene ripped from Saw or Hostel later, you are in the skeleton of a Fallout 4 style power armor, minus all the armor.

The Surge is free to try before you buy on Steam until August the 29th; and is 60% off for the game, and with the DLC is 75% off until August the 30th.
