The 4.0 update of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has come out along with the second Fighter Pass containing Hero, the game’s Dragon Quest representative. First shown off at E3, the Hero is technically four characters in one; the protagonist of the recent-ish Dragon Quest XI, the hero of Dragon Quest III, the hero of Dragon Quest VIII and the boy variant of the hero of Dragon Quest IV. Costing $5.99 separately, the second Fighter Pass will come out with them and other Dragon Quest goodies.
The main gimmick surrounding the Hero is an MP system, which allows him to use special abilities. His neutral B attack launches Dragon Quest‘s “Frizz” type fire spells, which can be charged to fire its stronger variants (much like how Robin’s neutral B works) in return for a higher MP cost. His side B (Zap spells) and up B (Woosh) work similarly, with stronger variants being fired off if the B button is held down longer. However, spells will not go off if you don’t have enough MP, which can be regenerated over time or by inflicting hits; thus it’s important to keep an eye on MP, lest you need a strong Woosh to recover but don’t have the MP for it.
The Hero’s down B brings up a Command Selection, which contains a random assortment of spells. The spells consist of many classic Dragon Quest abilities adapted into fighting game form, with various functions. Psyche Up for instance boosts the damage of the next attack while Zoom teleports the character to safety. With all the spells factored in, director Masahiro Sakurai claims that the Hero “has the highest number of moves of all the fighters.”
The Hero is already a bit controversial because of his RNG elements. The Hero can occasionally inflict critical hits when attacking, dealing extra damage at random. The spell selection itself is already random and one of the spells that can be used is Dragon Quest‘s infamous Thwack spell, which has a rare chance of instantly killing an opponent. While the chances of landing are probably as low as in the original games and Thwack is balanced out with a high MP cost, it hasn’t stopped some people from being vocal about it.
Continuing the loyal Dragon Quest treatment, the fighter pack has Yggdrasil’s Altar from Dragon Quest XI as its stage. In comparison to the dismal 2 songs for the Final Fantasy series, Dragon Quest is getting 8, with 2 songs from the game of each Hero variant. It also comes along with Dragon Quest themed Mii costume parts and Spirits (which Final Fantasy also lacks).
Director Masahiro Sakurai showed off the character on the update’s launch, going into the ins and outs of how the Hero works. He also talked about some notable things from the update, accessible to everyone that doesn’t have the fighter’s pass. Final Smashes are nerfed in that they can run out if you don’t use them fast enough. A “Very Easy” mode has been added to the World of Light campaign. Online multiplayer introduces the ability for spectators to predict who will win a match to get currency and an online tournament mode has been added.
