The premier summer speedrunning event, Summer Games Done Quick, is back and will be ongoing until Saturday, June 29th. For those not in the know, Games Done Quick is a speedrunning event hosted on Twitch where runners showcase various games for charity, with viewers donating throughout the event. Games Done Quick started small but has since grown into a large event embraced by the gaming community, consistently raising millions of dollars for charity.

Since 2013, the summer variant of Games Done Quick has been donating proceeds to Doctors Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian organization. The last SGDQ managed to raise more than 2 million and given that the number of donations has consistently grown throughout the years, SGDQ 2019 is likely to top that.

SGDQ 2019 opened with a run of Spyro the Dragon from the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. It was run by ChrisLBC, and the run is currently up on the Games Done Quick official YouTube channel. The event plans to end with a 6 hour or less glitchless run of Chrono Trigger by puwexil on Saturday afternoon.

There’s some good stuff coming up today. For instance, speedrunners Jcool114 and Kwaniza will be racing each other in Super Mario Sunshine at 6:50 p.m. Races are my favorite speedruns to watch because there’s an added competitive edge to it, and tension to see who pulls ahead. Then there’s some sillier stuff coming, like a run of only Big the Cat’s levels in Sonic Adventure DX.

Earlier in the day, there were runs of games like Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, but there were also some more obscure pulls like Chasm: The Rift and The Textorcist. These obscure pulls are usually expected from GDQ morning blocks, and add an interesting bit of variety to the event. I recommend checking out Games Done Quick’s schedule to find more specific times and to see what is coming up in the future.

If you miss out on a run that you’ve been looking forward to, you can expect to see it up on the official Games Done Quick channel within days.
