Desmond “Etika” Amofah, a streamer that is most well-known for his over-the-top reactions to Super Smash Bros. trailers, has been exhibiting bizarre behavior over the past few months pointing to a possible mental disorder. These incidents have recently escalated in him assaulting a New York police officer, resulting in his arrest.
An (extremely shaky) Snapchat video was spread around yesterday, showing Amofah suddenly assaulting a police officer while a young crowd egged him on. The latter part of the video shows more officers approaching him to (hopefully, peacefully) apprehend him. The lead-up to the incident is currently not known. This comes off the tail end of the incidents on the 29th. On that day, Amofah suddenly went on a bizarre, cryptic Twitter tirade that led to the police being called to check up on him. He livestreamed his resistance on Instagram until the police broke into his apartment to detain him.
Despite assaulting an officer, Amofah surprisingly got off light (though, it probably helped that a crowd was around). Rather than being sent to jail, Amofah was once again detained and sent to a hospital. A doctor called @TheAlicePika, a close friend (who Amofah blocked in the midst of his late-April tirade), who tried to ensure that Amofah will stay there for longer than a day. There was a brief scare when there was a livestream started under his name, but it was a fake channel that used footage from one of his past streams.
There has been some speculation on Amofah’s behavior. Some thought that all this was a ploy to get attention. Some people on his subreddit, r/EtikaRedditNetwork which has mostly turned against him, at this point; believe that he may be part of a cult. However, somebody looking for attention doesn’t just ruin a source of income, as he did last October when he got his YouTube channel deleted. Assaulting a police officer is also incredibly risky.
A more mundane, much less conspiratorial answer is that Amofah likely has a mental disorder that has gone unaddressed. Considering that he got out of his past detainment in mere hours, enough wasn’t being done to address his problems and hopefully this time, he’ll get the help he needs.
