You ever play a game and wonder how a certain small aspect about it got made? Have you ever wondered how Persona 5 achieved its stylish All-Out Attack screens? Have you ever considered that something as seemingly simple as a character select screen takes a bit of work? The YouTube channel, Mix and Jam, approaches these ideas and tries to execute them in Unity.

Mix and Jam is a YouTube channel run by André Cardoso, an indie developer, where he tries to recreate small aspects of big triple-A games in Unity as game design experiments. Through recording his efforts, Cardoso portrays his game development experiments as something that anyone can try for themselves, showing viewers his scripts and walking viewers through his processes.

The first video in Cardoso’s video series is a video trying to recreate the map screen in Super Mario Odyssey. From the eyes of a casual observer, the Odyssey map screen seems simple, but Cardoso’s breakdown shows that there’s a lot of flair and style that goes into the simple transition screen; utilizing rotational pivots to mimic the camera rotating around points on the game’s planet.

There are currently seven videos in the Mix and Jam series, with the latest being Cardoso’s attempt to recreate the warp strike move in Final Fantasy XV. The videos are all short, getting right to the point of their subject matter while communicating Cardoso’s methods effectively, making it an easy thing to binge watch. If you are a Unity developer learning how to make things, it’s an interesting thing to watch; as a showcase of Unity’s tools as well as the various plug-ins that Mix and Jam will utilize to give the experiments extra polish. However, Mix and Jam is still a fun watch regardless of whether you’re a developer or not and it’s always fascinating to see the process that goes into the making of something, even if it’s just an imitation.
