This is quickly becoming a regular occurrence for Epic and the Epic Store; much like Humble Bundle often gives games away for free, Epic Games are doing it on a calendar. The latest game to arrive on the Epic Store for free is The Witness.

The Witness is a first-person, 3D puzzle game that caused quite a stir upon arrival back in 2016. Showered in praise by reviewers and consumers alike, people were in love with Jonathan Blow’s second game, the previous title being Braid. Some criticized the game for its low field of view and head bob (both fixed now); while others have said the design is confusing as some puzzles are based on logic, while similar looking puzzles are based on the environment.

Personally, I have been unable to play The Witness until now, as I am sure all of us have long backlogs. The Witness is low on my personal list of games to play. However, I am intrigued by how beautiful the entire game is and by the fact there are puzzles: Though I do know there is a story, a story told through audio logs. As I’m sure many of you do, I do not care for the artsy half-told story behind many games with audio logs, including Marvel’s Spider-man, Just Cause 3, BioShock, and Deus Ex. As South Park: The Stick of Truth said, “For some reason, I keep listening to every minute of every-one thinking there will be some useful information but […] They are just filler! Filler that is driving me to madness!” All of which is in an audio log.

As I said, I am excited to finally play The Witness, but I have some trepidation about the issues some have denoted to me. Though I do believe I will somewhat appreciate the game nonetheless.

If you would like, you can pick up The Witness through today (April the 4th) until April the 18th over on the Epic Games store.
