It’s official! Maybe. The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.) announced Monday that the main event of Wrestlemania 35 will consist of an all-female bout. The pessimist inside me says this probably won’t be the case, despite the official announcement though. Wrestlemania 33 in Orlando featured a women’s match in the twelfth (of thirteen matches) position of the night; a five-minute match that was later proclaimed to be “co-main event.” Either WWE is rewriting their own history, or repeating a mistake they have already made at a previous event.

However, the optimistic side of me is beyond thrilled for this moment. Growing up watching women’s wrestling I saw Lita and Trish Stratus main event Monday Night RAW, outperform the men, and instill inside me a respect that almost no one else receives from me. In short, when I want to watch wrestling, I turn to the women for an interesting story or better matches. The women have seen some stellar matches in what WWE has dubbed their “Women’s Evolution,” which in itself developed from the “Diva’s Revolution.”

If WWE is to believed, and they hold the women’s main event at Wrestlemania 35 in New York this April 7th, this truly will be the first. The first time in thirty-five years women will hold the coveted closing spot of the night, a night that will see eleven (possibly more) matches. Now, if you are still wondering, there are a total of three women’s matches at the event. However, after fumbling through what they have left of the story, the main event of Wrestlemania 35 will be a triple threat title match between Ronda Rousey (the champion,) Becky Lynch, and Charlotte Flair.

In the official statement from WWE, they stated: “For the first time in WWE[‘s] history, a women’s match will be the main event of WrestleMania […] featuring Ronda Rousey vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch will take place on Sunday, April 7, in front of a capacity crowd at MetLife Stadium and streaming live on WWE Network around the world.

This was then followed by a short run down of each competitor’s history, an moreover, the background of this current story. Ronda Rousey, the former UFC women’s Bantamweight champion and Olympic bronze medalist returns to Wrestlemania after debuting there one year prior, this time with the RAW women’s championship. Ronda was originally to face off with Becky Lynch, former Smackdown women’s champion and 2019 women’s Royal Rumble winner, who has been in a bitter feud with Rousey since the Survivor Series last year.

Then finally, Charlotte Flair, former NXT and Smackdown women’s champion, has been in an on again-off again friendship with Lynch for a couple of years now. This story has culminated into what many see as one of the worst handled stories since people were angry about Daniel Bryan’s Wrestlemania story. As I’ve been out of the wrestling sphere for a few months now, I have missed the majority of this story, and I’ve only been catching pieces here and there.

Ultimately, I’ll judge this story once we see the match. We will all have to wait until the night of April 7th to find out if WWE will stick to their word on this main event. As I said earlier, I am excited if this is true, though I am skeptical.
