“[Thursday], VOID Interactive announced during the highly-anticipated inaugural Galaxies Showcase that its acclaimed tactical FPS Ready or Not is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Epic Game Store, and Microsoft Store this Summer,” Before going on to mention the cinematic trailer announcing it. I will contest the “highly-anticipated,” but mostly because the first notable instance of hearing about this showcase was one of these post-show press releases. Yes, I’ll complain about these things forever and always.
The press release continues, “Console players enter the world of Los Sueños. The surge of crime across the greater Los Sueños metropolitan area has severely depleted LSPD resources, threatening to overwhelm the department’s ability to maintain order. In response to the growing threats facing residents, LSPD is mobilizing its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams to respond to high-threat scenarios, including active bomb threats, barricaded suspects[,] and high-risk hostage situations to minimize police casualties. Timed to the console launch, VOID Interactive is releasing ‘Stories from Los Sueños’ free DLC in the form of two new single-player or online cooperative missions.”
As noted in the Steam post announcing this, VOID Interactive detailed some extra features and what to expect from these two “new” maps. The phrasing exactly is, “2 old but new maps, reimagined from the ground up (familiar territory, with a whole new coat of paint).” So those who played during the early access period, that’s certainly a good thing to hear, but it’s not the only free DLC. It might be for those on consoles, but the pre-order bonus for consoles will also be free on launch for PC players: the MK-V pistol, 590M shotgun, the gas and flash M32A1 launcher, and a new pepper ball pistol.
This is alongside the upcoming update(s) for PC that will include difficulty options and a revamped training mode. However, what I think could be interesting/good for some is full crossplay between platforms. I hope that’s an optional thing, some who already play with random people will find it annoying, but certain others will want to play with friends, whether they’re on consoles or not. What could prove a problem is when PC players play with certain mods that console players don’t/won’t have, and that will become a major limiting factor of crossplay for some.
We don’t have a definitive date yet on when VOID Interactive’s Ready or Not will be heading to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but we do know it will be sometime this summer. Barring any delays. Those who do want to pick up the base game alone can do so for $49.99 (£44.99/€49.99), while the Day One edition (never pre-order without some idea of the quality) is $49.99 (£44.99/€49.99), which is odd. The Day One edition includes the pre-order bonuses of the new guns, and that’s it. For the same price (according to the press release), it makes sense to go for that, but we also know how terrible pre-orders can be.
The final edition is the Deluxe edition for $69.99 (£59.99/€69.99), and it includes the base game (of course), the pre-order bonuses, “Home Invasion” DLC, the “Dark Waters” DLC, and “Unannounced DLC3.” Of course, the already-released DLCs can be bought separately for $9.99 (£7.99/€9.99) each. Maybe I’ll get the drafts of reviews I have of the DLCs out before the console release, or the heat death of the universe.
Some like to bemoan Ready or Not for not having new updates every second week, not having new maps three seconds after the person has completed the game, and so on. I get it, Ready or Not is short and there is a focus on the replayability of levels, but at the same time, I have to question it because it’s SWAT 4 but shiny. After over 120 hours throughout the base game and DLCs, I’m a little “biased” but I’m glad more people will get a chance to play Ready or Not later this year. With the difficulty update, I’m glad it’s on their terms.
