Erenshor will immediately become familiar to fans of the MMORPG genre. Its art style and design are highly similar to World of Warcraft or Runescape in the 2000s. The significant difference here (besides the game releasing in 2025) is that the MMORPG elements are simulated. You are playing a single-player experience where the others around you, designed to look like other player characters, are programmed.

For some, that might seem like it defeats the purpose of the MMO aspect of the genre. I think this is an exciting and intriguing variation of the genre, and honestly, I’m not looking to hop into a new MMORPG anytime soon. Something like this, however, with quests, a world to learn, and monsters to hunt, sounds like a blast. It’s akin to the gameplay loop we’re used to in games like Monster Hunter Wilds but with a nostalgic coat of dial-up paint thrown onto it.

Erenshor promises independent gameplay with the simulated elements of dungeon-diving, quest-hunting, and boss-battling with NPC allies. Your simulated players around you even level up at varying rates and seek to upgrade equipment just like you. Guilds, side quests, and other elements provide an MMORPG experience without other people. The concept alone is excellent, but I also love the retro design of the world.

The early buzz around the game has heavily focused on its inventive premise. Plus, plenty of us got our early PC gaming memories from titles that look and play a lot like Erenshor. It’s great that this game style can potentially reach people who don’t often play multiplayer titles. Plus, with a strong community, we could see Erenshor stick around for a long time.

Erenshor is available now on Steam for $19.99, with a 10% discount at launch. Let us know in the comments if you plan to check it out!
