I am a big fan of mascot platformers, as I have made it well known here in many articles. However, there are several lesser-known platformers that I hold close to my heart as well. One of those is Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, which was originally released in 1997 for the PC, Sony PlayStation, and Sega Saturn. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos has now been re-released across PC and all major consoles with a cute (yet tough) remaster.
Croc is (as you can imagine) a young Crocodile who was found in a basket floating down the river by little fuzzy creatures known as Gobbos. The Gobbos raise Croc, teaching him how they live and growing to love the warmhearted crocodile. One day, the evil Baron Dante arrives, kidnapping the Gobbos and unleashing his evil Dantinis. Now it is up to you to help Croc free his friends and take the fight to Baron Dante.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos plays like a mixture of the original Spyro the Dragon, Crash Bandicoot, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Croc collects white crystals throughout the levels, and if he takes damage, he loses the crystals until he picks them up (similar to Sonic). There are also keys that can be found and used to unlock locked doors and cages as well.
As far as level design is concerned, the levels are small, compact levels that should be completed in a few minutes, at least at first. In each level, there are several Gobbos, as well as five Rainbow Crystals that unlock a Rainbow Door at the end of the level. The Rainbow Door has a special puzzle that leads to another Gobbo.
If you free all the Gobbos in each level, at the end of each world you unlock a secret level. This gives you an incentive to replay levels and uncover all the secrets each world has in store. This isn’t an easy task, but if you like classic platformers like the original Crash Bandicoot, you’ll love it.
This remastered edition not only has updated HD graphics, but it also has a whole host of other enhancements. These additions include modern control schemes, an updated camera, and options to toggle between the remastered graphics and classic visuals. On top of that, the development team spent ages gathering concept art and development materials from the 90s to create the Crocipedia, a digital museum for fans to browse.
There are 45 levels, with tough bosses and plenty of platforming challenges to explore. While the levels are simplistic in design, and the visuals are clearly an example of the era they were created, there is a reason Croc has remained a cult classic for so long. As a remaster, I would say this is a pitch-perfect effort.
You can switch between visual styles and control schemes at any time too, if the Modern remastered version doesn’t hit the right spot. So, whether you are a new player or a fan looking for a nostalgic bite, Croc’s first adventure is ready just for you.
