To say the launch of Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin on PC was well done would be (to put it very lightly) a tad underselling the issues. I didn’t run into anything too severe when I did the review back in March, but I did see a few performance issues. Again, I won’t say all of the issues are related to the launch-day patch and beyond specific. A good portion of my time playing was done before any of those patches were available. Nonetheless, the development team at Team Ninja has been working on updates, some of which are still going out.

We are currently investigating reported issues for Rise of the Ronin[‘s] Steam Version. Currently[,] we are preparing a patch, which will be released 4/10 (Thu), to fix or improve some of these issues,” as the studio announced on Twitter (start calling your daughter by her name and I’ll maybe call it by name too). The statement goes on to state, “We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences that you may have experienced.

Among the issues noted by players in the month or so since launch have been deleted saves, the noted texture loading issue from the review, and several other things. This isn’t the first Team Ninja game to have issues with a PC launch. However, it is no less annoying to be excited about a game’s release, to plop down 49 schmeckles (yes, I know what it means), and for the game to crash, run poorly, and in some cases be seemingly unplayable. My experience during the review period wasn’t as heavily damned by these issues, and when it’s not running poorly, Rise of the Ronin is pretty good.

I favorably compared it to earlier Assassin’s Creed games, as I couldn’t say too much about Assassin’s Creed Shadows at the time. I also drew Monster Hunter-like vibes from it, which is only from my limited experience with Monster Hunter. (For the full review you can check it out here.) Hopefully, Team Ninja can get a handle on the present issues and make Rise of the Ronin as good as it should be, it’s certainly worth a look if you like PS2-era RPGs with some modern sensibilities.
