If you were browsing the Steam Next Fest demos, you’d find a lot of bullet heaven/roguelites. That’s because the Vampire Survivors train is still chugging along, and developers are flocking to that game’s overwhelming success. I’ve found some of my favorite games in the last few years because of that, such as Soulstone Survivors and Bore Blasters. Some of the more amateur efforts have gone by the wayside as the genre has become bloated in no time. When I installed the I Am Legion: Stand Survivors demo during Steam Next Fest, I completely forgot the name of the game until I wrapped up my first run.

I was remiss to write this game off, though, as I Am Legion: Stand Survivors nails the balance of progressive upgrades, incremental difficulty, and experimenting with builds. The secret sauce in this title is your eight active, living weapons. You can combine them for massive upgrades as your screens begins to flood with baddies. Figuring out which weapons work in tandem is a joy as you watch the screen clear after each upgraded class utilizes its devastating ability. On top of that, you can do the same with your equipment for massive stat buffs to get the edge.

Everything that came together in I Am Legion: Stand Survivors made it as cohesive and memorable as other roguelite/bullet heavens that manage to stand out. It’s so challenging to manage all the moving parts in this genre to manufacture that “just one more run” feeling. However, this game knocks it out of the park, and I actually put some considerable time into the demo. With a quickly-looming release date of March 7th, 2025, this is the right time to download the demo and see if it generates the same feeling that you got the first time you fired up Vampire Survivors.
