Heroes of Newerth was one of the many games released during the initial MOBA boom of the late 2000s coming onto the scene in 2010. Unfortunately, the game never managed to compete with the longevity of the biggest competitors League of Legends and Dota 2 and the original servers shut down in 2022. However, it seems that the original developers at S2 Games are back once again under a new banner. Heroes of Newerth: Reborn is a revamped version of the classic experience that will receive continual support from the developers at Kongor Studios and publisher Garena.

Unlike the original title, Reborn will be starting as a free-to-play title and will feature over 80 heroes at launch along with enhanced graphics, improved performance, brand new user interface, and quality-of-life features such as being able to role queue. The game will also feature some new gameplay mechanics in the form of allies such as the Raven and an ape creature named after the studio itself, Kongor. Ravens can be utilized to scout territory while the Kongor is a powerful tool that can assist your team with making pivotal assaults on enemy lanes. Players can also expect a new boss enemy, The Phoenix which promises to drop huge rewards for the victorious team.

Jesse Hayes, Co-founder of  Kongor Studios and former S2 developer had this to say in regards to the relaunch. “After years of community support and the dedication of a passionate fan base, we are beyond excited to bring Heroes of Newerth back to life. This isn’t just a relaunch, but a reimagining of what the game can be in today’s competitive gaming world. From the visuals to the network performance, we’ve worked hard to bring the best possible experience to both veteran players and newcomers.”  As of now there is still no word on an official release date for this remaster but I imagine the servers will go live sometime later this year.

Heroes of Newerth: Reborn will serve as the inaugural title for the iGames platform. This is a new online service that in addition to publishing exclusive titles, is designed to give users access to game assets to create their own games. The website compares its services to the original map editing software found in Warcraft 3, which allowed for the creation of Dota and the entirety of the MOBA genre.

It’s certainly an interesting concept but seems rather counterintuitive to the success of Heroes of Newerth: Reborn. The quickest way to draw in new players and build a strong player base is to bring the title to an already established platform such as Steam rather than locking it behind a completely new service. Time will tell if this relaunch can manage to revitalize the game and bring some solid competition within the MOBA genre.

I've been playing games since I was a little kid. I have a soft spot for Nintendo titles and RPG's but play all kinds of titles across a variety of platforms. Outside of games I love to play music and practice martial arts. You can find me on Facebook and Instagram as well.
