With Steam Sales coming about on a more frequent basis than ever, it seems each genre is getting their time to shine. I sunk a pretty penny into the Bullet Heaven fest last month, and now it’s time for a fan favorite genre to receive a ton of discounts to encourage players to put dozens of hours into them. Real-time strategy games are cherished for their quick-thinking gameplay, deep critical analyzation, trial-and-error, and many other factors that make it a timeless classic style of video gaming. Here are some discounts that caught my eye in the current Steam Real-Time Strategy Fest!

Impossible Creatures Steam Edition – 75% off – $2.49

You can’t beat the classics! Impossible Creatures is a hidden gem RTS that was beloved by anyone that played the original back in 2003. Take control of a bevy of animals and build an army of genetic modifications a la Noah’s Ark monstrosities to take on animals controlled by the antagonist. This version of the game works on modern OS, includes all patches/the Insect Invasion DLC, boasts multiplayer, and is just an absolute blast and the perfect entry point to anyone curious about its premise and the real-time strategy genre as a whole for less than the price of a coffee.

Halo Wars Definitive Edition – 75% off – $4.99

Another seamless segue for newcomers to RTS would be Halo Wars, a strategy title within the Halo franchise. As real-time strategy games arguably work best with a mouse to dictate the action at a frenetic pace as opposed to a controller that needs to hover over everything, Halo Wars may have flown over the radar when it came out on the Xbox 360 in 2009 if those gamers didn’t have a PC at the time. This acclaimed title will satisfy fans of the universe and is easier to work into the genre and get satisfying victories with.

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew – 40% off – $23.99

A newcomer into the fold, but a highly-regarded one, Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew takes the strategy genre into the seven seas for a swashbuckling caper. Here’s a title for those who love being in control of not just the combat but also the narrative. You can control one of eight crew members, each with their unique gameplay abilities. While I haven’t gone hands-on with this one, it’s loaded with high review scores and thousands of positive reviews from players, so it’s a safe bet for anyone keen on it.

Thronefall – 25% off – $9.74

A visually striking and compelling title, Thronefall is a bit of an outlier as it incorporates the city-builder and tower-defense subgenres into the mix. There’s nothing wrong with genre-blending, though: this is a winning formula as it leads the player to grow more attached to their units and push for a win even harder. This game is sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive ratings and can run on a potato PC and a Steam Deck easily. With some reviews praising it as one of the best games in recent memory, this is a surefire purchase for those so inclined.
