It goes without saying, this idea of an all-digital future is pretty crap. One minute you might have created a nice little living out of an online platform for it to disappear soon after, and in one case return shortly after thanking the person that targeted the banning of that online platform in the first place. Or in the case of online digital stores, you build up a library of games using your hard-earned money, and then said store and its DRM-based app are going away. Thankfully for EA Origin there is a replacement, with an app that’s basically the same but with dark mode and a different name.
As reported early this morning by GamesIndustry.Biz and Eurogamer, Electronic Arts will be stopping support of EA Origin from April onwards. According to an update in the EA help desk-thing, basically it is because Windows doesn’t like supporting 32-bit software, so moving forward you’ll have to use the 64-bit EA App instead. All your games are automatically transferred, so say you’ve recently downloaded Titanfall 2 again to play that good story, it is still there if you’re on the same PC.
Upgrading your operating system shouldn’t need a redownload either, but obviously, if it is a new PC you will or you can data transfer if possible. Cloud saves are also something that will automatically transfer between launchers.
Launched back in 2011, EA Origin wasn’t everyone’s ideal way of playing games as every publisher-owned launcher has been a button of contention. However, from personal experience, I think EA’s service was arguably the least invasive when trying to launch a game in the end. It is still EA, so of course there are problems with the EA App, but the EA App is basically the same app down to its annoying quirks. On April 17th, EA Origin will be shutdown due to Microsoft’s lack of support for 32-bit software.
