I am a big fan of the Metroidvania genre. The sense of progression, the exploration, and hidden secrets, all of these things make a unique gaming experience. However, I’ve never heard of a Metroidvania without combat – until now.

No Sequels Cooperative has announced a new game called Embroideryvania, a Metroidvania with no combat whatsoever. Instead, Embroideryvania is a couch co-op Metroidvania that seeks to provide a pacifist experience, while teaching players a thing or two along the way. Here is what the press release has to say about Embroideryvania.

No Sequels Cooperative, is thrilled to announce Embroideryvania, a groundbreaking addition to the beloved Metroidvania genre. Designed for split-screen, local couch co-op, the game immerses gamers and non-gamers in a serene, wholesome, embroidered world free of combat.

Players take on the role of a snail going on an exploration with a companion to a whimsical plant park, discovering unique shellpacks, solving navigation puzzles, and learning about identifying plant life in both the gaming and the real worlds. With its hand-”stitched” art style and emphasis on exploration, Embroideryvania redefines both co-op and metroidvania gameplay.

Fox Walker, Game Director of Embroideryvania commented on the announcement, expressing their goals for the game. “We wanted to create a cozy and interesting game that can be shared with a non-gamer companion during a date night.”

This goal falls in line with No Sequels Cooperative’s mission statement. The company aims to create enjoyable co-op experiences that don’t have the need for or inspire sequels. Simple “one and done” experiences that are satisfying and allow the team to move on to other projects.

As a fan of more single-player experiences, I understand No Sequels Cooperative’s goal, but it isn’t exactly for me. At the same time, the concept of Embroideryvania is very intriguing, and I wouldn’t mind checking it out one day. Here’s hoping we see more as development progresses.
