On one of my monitors, the one to the left of the screen on which I’m typing this, an anime-style character is also typing at a computer. She’s accompanied by her spirit cat, and the fireplace nearby is decorated for the holidays. Believe it or not, she’s helping me keep my busy end-of-the-year organized. This is the goal of Spirit City: Lofi Sessions. We often make resolutions for the New Year about being intentional, getting our focus in order, or maybe just working on staying organized. Spirit City: Lofi Sessions is the perfect tool for that, and it’s one of my favorite surprises on Steam this year.
Elements of Spirit City feel familiar to fellow cozy gamers. Developer Mooncube Games certainly knows the aesthetic they’re aiming for here. This game will also be familiar to anyone who has spent time on YouTube listening to the Lofi Girl playlists full of relaxing music and anime art. You’ll create a character, fully customize their look, and find yourself in a sandbox designed to help you create the cozy space of your dreams.
The game here isn’t really a game; it’s more of a digital space to allow yourself an inviting space to use productivity tools. Whereas many tools for productivity timers and to-do lists look minimal and, in some cases, downright drab, Spirit City invites you to work on your cozy space by getting stuff done. You can access a to-do list, a productivity timer, a habit tracker, and a journal, all of which exist in-game. As you get things done, you earn Spirit Credits, which allow you to purchase new items for your room. Everything from your bed to what you keep on your bay window side table can be customized to your heart’s content.
As you can imagine, music is also a big part of the game. There are channels ranging from refreshing study session tunes to spooky melodies for Halloween time. On top of the music, you can add sounds like a creek or a cat purring to the mix to reach peak coziness. I was running a gentle snowstorm mixed with music box-like holiday songs during the holiday season. I mean, c’mon, how perfect is that? I also began to find myself excited to make my daily to-do list, an activity I usually dread. This is the genius of Spirit City: Lofi Sessions. It takes the hectic nature of our day-to-day and allows us to make it comforting.
As you spend time with the game running while you work, you attract spirits to visit you. These spirits are hidden and attracted to playing with the game’s lighting, activities, and sounds. This element allows you to do some in-game puzzle solving to see what can get each spirit to come out so you can log them in your Spiritdex. It’s a nice addition, but the real hero here is simply seeing your space slowly reflect what you would like your perfect cozy nook to look like.
As you eye 2025 and begin to wonder how you can improve your task management, your ability to stay calm when life gets busy, or just simply have a new tool to help motivate you to stay on top of things, Spirit City: Lofi Sessions could be the resource you need. At $11.99 USD on Steam, I think this is incredibly valuable. Not to mention it’s less expensive than most productivity apps and sits conveniently right in your Steam library, which we all know is open when you’re trying to be productive and usually getting in the way of that. At least with Spirit City, that’s not the case anymore.
