I knew it, I knew Jeffrey Preston Bezos was going to annoy me. With the release of the Amazon Prime show Secret Level, an anthology series of different game franchises that released today, the 10th of December. Of course, for the main Prime Gaming article for December, you can click here and find out what else is available for the month.
Available now through GOG this time, you can pick up Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: Space Edition. Sorry, The Outer Worlds which is completely different from The Outer Wilds because it doesn’t have a bunch of spoilers that I don’t want to ruin. The Outer Worlds was released long before Starfield, despite being announced the same year and starting development a year later. The space-western inspired by Firefly is pretty good. It is also quite short; the super sexy Spacer’s Choice Edition only takes about 18-20 hours to complete roughly.
I should also probably note that all of these games are available now, including Spelunky via GOG. Look, if you’re surprised by any of this, I’m probably spoiling some of the episodes included in Secret Level for you. Released in 2008 (oh so long ago), then again later in 2013 to Steam and elsewhere, if you’ve just kicked the pipe and need a new addiction to ruin your life, Spelunky‘s “one more run” factor is going to have your life in tatters by Christmas day.
Blood for the blood GOG! Another franchise that is set to heavily be part of Tim Miller’s Tower of Khorne, Space Hulk: Deathwing Enhanced Edition is a first-person shooter in the Space Hulk section of the Warhammer 40K universe, in the further subsection of Deathwing. To put it into perspective, you can go play Space Hulk Tactics (originally just called Space Hulk) and it is a completely different game because Warhammer 40K is a mess of a series if you are on the outside. Space Hulk: Deathwing launched poorly in 2016, but the Enhanced Edition aimed to address several issues including performance poorer than the specs of your PC back in 2016.
Missing a trick to make people really like you Jeffrey, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine is available through the Amazon Games App. It is important to note that despite launching with multiplayer back in 2011, this version available through the Amazon Games App is only single-player. The precursor to the hugely popular release earlier this year, you play as one of those blokes built like a bear trapped in a mech suit stomping around, shouting and laughing as you kill everything Lord Nemeroth throws at you. There is a reason people were excited about this year’s Space Marine 2.
Also available through the Amazon Games App and once again single-player-only (so no multiplayer), we’re going back to a zenith of the RTS genre in 2004. Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War changed up the RTS genre by throwing away a lot of the resource mechanics of other games in the genre in favor of a lot of aggression, which I typically like. Generally speaking, aside from “Soulstorm” which can suck an old man’s toe, Dawn of War is a really fun and interesting entry into the RTS genre and the Warhammer series.
Just so we’re talking about the same series back to back, from the 12th you’ll be able to pick up Dawn of War II, also through the Amazon Games App. Once again you are only getting the single-player, so go in knowing this. Released in 2009, Dawn of War II tried to change up that formula again, being a bit more like Relic Entertainment’s other major RTS of the time, Company of Heroes. Not really a bad thing, but you are getting the single-player which means you’ll focus on the campaign, which is also more of an action-based tactical RPG than a traditional RTS.
To return to what is available here and now, you can head over to the Epic Games Store (it gets worse) and pick up 2021’s Necromunda: Hired Gun. Trying to be as brutal and fast-paced as the Dooms of modern times, this Warhammer 40K variant of sending demons (or health insurance CEOs) back to hell does about as much right as a politician around a child. With as much bite and sharpness as a deflated balloon, the lifeless AI and visuals lacking a spark leave this Warhammer-dressed Doom (2016)-clone with a lot to desire.
With the bountiful offers of Warhammer out of the way, what else is available? First released in 1998, this 2012 enhancement by Overhaul Games is something we’ve seen a couple of times in Prime Gaming because it is Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition. I spoke about the game based on the second edition of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons back in July. If your first experience of D&D is what I call “Baldur’s Gay 3,” you might even find this Enhanced Edition a bit too archaic.
Released a year later, Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition isn’t going to be too much better in that regard either. That, and I already spoke about it back in August too. However, in the case of both previously being available through the Amazon Games App, you can pick up both Baldur’s Gate games through GOG. This makes me think with all the GOG codes of late, we might be sunsetting the Amazon Games App somewhat. Either way, as I said before, “Gay is in. Gay is hot. I want some gay. Gay it’s gonna be.”
Before we go on to the final game added to Prime Gaming due to the release of Secret Level, it is worth noting due to the show there is an addition to the Amazon Luna library for the month, Mega Man 11. Given I ignore Luna most of the time, that isn’t going to change just because of Mega Man 11.
The final game available (at least for now) via GOG is Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, released in 2002 by Bioware with the Enhanced Edition released in 2017. Moving up an edition, Neverwinter Nights is based on the third rule set for D&D which is probably still a bit too archaic for those of us who like slutty vampires and hot (literally) women.
That said, Neverwinter Nights does something to boot that other’s in the D&D realm aren’t really doing right now, you could create custom campaigns and even DM in MUDs (don’t make me feel old) or a number of other things. Praised on release and very ambitious, if you’re looking for shiny nipples and perfect hair, you’re in the wrong Forgotten Realms.
