It is rare that a Square Enix game flies under my radar, especially one boasting the creative duo behind Final Fantasy: Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu as lead designer and composer respectively. Fantasian was originally released exclusively for the Apple Arcade back in 2021. Now this week Square Enix has saw fit to make the game available for a wider audience by releasing the game for both consoles and PC. Fantasian: Neo Dimension sports improved 4K visuals but will also feature additional content and new English and Japanese voice acting.
Players can test their skills with a new hard difficulty level, or utilize the collaboration BGM feature. This allows you to customize the battle music to your liking and even swap out tracks for those found in the recent Final Fantasy titles such as: Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy XIV and it’s subsequent expansions, Final Fantasy XVI, and the pixel remaster for games I-VI.
The story of Fantasian takes place across a series of universes in a sweeping world-hopping adventure. You play as the protagonist, Leo as he searches for a way to recover his memory. Meanwhile, an infection by the name of Mechteria ravages the world robbing humans of their free will and replacing natural environments with industrialized artificial landscapes. The gameplay returns to the classic turn-based combat that Square Enix has popularized for over two decades.
However, the real draw for this game comes in the unique graphical style. While characters are relatively basic and utilize standard rendering techniques, every background in the game is based off a hand-crafted diorama model. It’s quite a striking combination that evokes the same timeless beauty as the hand-drawn backgrounds seen in earlier Final Fantasy games and many other RPGs of the PS1 era. Fantasian: Neo Dimension is available now for 49.99 USD on Nintendo Switch, PS4/5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. The game is also fully optimized for play on Steam Deck as well.
