If there’s anything the past few years have taught us, particularly those of us who pay attention to the gaming industry, it’s that everything old becomes new again. Remakes, reboots, remasters, all of these things are en-vogue right now. It seems that an old challenger is returning to the ring as well, namely the Virtua Fighter franchise.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O has been announced for Steam. This is also the first “new” release on consoles since Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown in 2021. The most recent franchise release was Virtua Fighter 3tb Online in Arcades in 2023. This also happens to be the first PC release for the franchise in 27 years. Here is what the press release says about the new release:

“SEGA of America has announced the return of the Virtua Fighter™ series to PC with the release of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. on Steam. Players eager to get into the ring can Wishlist the game starting today by visiting the official Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. Steam page. The game is due to be released this coming Winter.

Based on Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown™, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O gives players an optimized gaming experience in their quest to become the world’s best fighter. Offering support of up to 60fps/4K resolution, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O will contain the game’s first balance adjustments in 13 years and will also support rollback netcode, allowing players to enjoy smoother, more heated online battles with other challengers around the world.”

There isn’t much else to say about Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O right now. The Steam page calls it “The Ultimate Edition” of Ultimate Showdown, and more information is slated to be revealed as we get closer to this nebulous “Winter” launch. Regardless of that, I’m glad that the franchise is coming out of hibernation.

This is a great time for fighting games, with a lot of great franchises swimming around. Maybe this release will incentivize SEGA to possibly bring about a Virtua Fighter 6? Even if that doesn’t happen, fans of Virtua Fighter 5 have something to look forward to.
