With the Las Vegas Grand Prix this weekend, which began last night with the first and second running of practice, it is safe to say that Formula 1 has been under a sort of boom period for a couple of years now. With a colorful cast of characters in Drive to Survive, to the on-track action (sometimes) being quite “spicey,” there are a number of factors. With that comes a lot of opportunities to capitalize on the big name that is Formula 1; we’ve seen NFTs, mobile games, books, and countless other revenue streams being jumped on, most notably Frontier’s F1 Manager.
According to a report by Ross McGregor of Traxion.gg, the latest financial statement confirms the cancelation of F1 Manager 2025. The statement on page 21 reads: “After 31 May 2024 and before the signing of the accounts on 10 September 2024, commercial discussions with an IP partner resulted in the voluntary termination of a contract for a future game before full development started.” When read alone this doesn’t point directly to F1 Manager, however, it has separately been confirmed to be the series in question.
According to Zeus Capital, with its report not really meant for public circulation, the statement is in fact about the now canceled F1 Manager 2025. Now pinning the hopes of a big release from Frontier squarely on that of Jurassic World Evolution 3, as was announced earlier this year in May. This comes following layoffs last October, which is made worse by the GLHF’s report in April of 2024 saying the layoffs were a result of mismanagement. The same report confirms that the F1 Manager series has grossly underperformed expectations, something later backed up by this cancelation.
What’s most surprising is that with the latest update and other recent additional features, those who have played F1 Manager 2024 say it is good now. The 2023 release didn’t make as many waves as I think it probably should for being the first licensed open-wheel management title released on PC in quite some time, it is said to be at least serviceable. Argued to be an improvement, the niche management sim of F1 Manager 2024 wasn’t enough to save the short-lived series, it seems.
