The best running joke in the PC gaming community is seeing what kind of contraption DOOM manages to run on. From calculators to pregnancy test screens to the recently released Alarmo, it’s almost a guarantee that if something has a screen, it can handle the classic 1993 FPS title. In an unconventional twist, randomly scrolling X (formerly Twitter), I saw the words, “IN 3 HOURS (6 PM EST) I’m gonna attempt to run DOOM on horse electrolytes.”
Stopping me dead in my tracks, immediately I had to know what exactly would go into this and if it would really pan out to be a possibility.
This wasn’t the first rodeo for the content creator behind the stunt, uwo’s lab, as their YouTube/Twitch channels are chock full of zany experiments, such as smoking steaks with 500 cigarettes or custom-creating a reel controller for the excellent recent title, WEBFISHING. The veritable mad scientist decided to take on the DOOM challenge, this time sourcing the energy needed to run the game with a base of horse electrolytes. For the uninitiated, your body utilizes electrolytes, such as sugar and sodium, to power core functions. The idea here is to harness this energy source from an animal that needs far more electrolytes to function than a human would and see if it’s enough to maintain the needs of a Raspberry Pi.
At the time of writing, you can check out the attempt in the full live stream over on Twitch here.
